State funding for rights-of-way maps

ENVIRONMENT minister Michael Meacher has promised to fund the mapping of historic rights of way in the countryside, reports The Daily Telegraph.

Mr Meacher told the House of Commons that he wanted to see as many rights of way properly recorded as soon as possible, says the paper.

Hundreds of miles of footpaths and bridleways are still not recorded and remain unused by the public, it adds.

Mr Meacher said that accurately mapping the rights of way would meet the needs of modern recreation and also the interests of land managers.
