Strong fear over vehicle dumping
THE Country Land and Business Association has urged the government to act to prevent the countryside being used as a dumping ground for abandoned cars.
A European directive called the End of Life of Vehicles is supposed to come into force by Apr 21, said CLA Yorks director Dorothy Fairburn. "This states that car manufacturers must bear the cost of recycling cars from 2007 but until then, the government must decide how the costs will be met."
One option is the last owner must pay for car disposal. If that is the case then many of the 2m cars scrapped each year could be dumped in the countryside, said Miss Fairburn. Fly tipping is already of serious concern in the countryside and needs to be addressed.
Miss Fairburn cited a European directive on fridge disposal as another problem. "Some householders have to pay for them to be collected by the authorities. Now we have the added worry that they will dump them in the countryside." *
