GAINING the most from subsidy claims could mean buying suckler cow quota for heifers at Whistlow Farm.
Buying more quota units in July, when they become available to trade, would allow more claims to be made on this unit. However, claims would have to be made for heifers, as suckler cow quota is already met by his current herd numbers.
This can cause problems when the number of heifers subsidy is claimed on approaches the 20% threshold, cautions Signets Ian Ross. If a cow dies during the retention period it would have to be replaced by another cow and not an in-calf heifer. *
