Sugar leads commodities recovery

SUGAR is set to lead a recovery in commodity prices over the next three years, predicts the Economist Intelligence Units latest quarterly review.

The research group forecasts that the sugar price recovery has been sharper than expected this year, reports the Financial Times.

It predicts sugar prices will rise by 10% in 2000 and 20% in 2002, compared with falls of 30% in 1999 and 21% in 1998.

Global wheat prices are expected to rise by more than 19% in 2001 reflecting reflecting the lowest stocks for 20 years, the FT reports.
