Support for Limousin is still strong

LIMOUSIN supporters will be encouraged by the breeds continuing ability to endure the difficulties of the cattle industry after last weekends sale of pedigree stock from the Brockhurst herd along with several guest consignments.

Although entries from the production sale of Buckinghamshire breeder Doug Mashs Brockhurst herd fared well throughout the sale, it was a 1992-bred bull from White Rose Limousins that topped the trade at 5200gns.

Rachels Hamlet, bred by Derek Woolhouse, is the breeds national trait leader for 200-day growth, 400-day growth, muscle and beef value. There are over 200 recorded calves by Hamlet in the White Rose Limousin Group. In 1996 he was reserve supreme champion at the Great Yorkshire Show.

This son of Rachels Eureka is out of an Ibis dam. He joins C M Fanshawes herd at Nazeby, Northants, although some semen has been retained by the vendors.

Crownhead Senator cow

An embryo calf from Mr Mashs consignment, Brockhurst New-castle, made 2700gns. Sold suckling a recipient dam, the Septem-ber born bull calf is by Djerk and out of a Crownhead Senator cow carrying the Roughley prefix. Buyer was Norfolk breeder C B Arnold.

Best price for Matt and Rose Brunton, who run the Sheelin Limousin herd, was 2580gns for Conygar Hannah, a 1992-bred cow by Broadmeadows Tombola sold suckling a bull calf by Ronick Hawk. Buyer was L V Hill, Buntingford, Herts.

The 1995-bred heifer Roughley Lustre, by Danish sire Tanholm Claus, is from one of the herds most successful lines combining Wintershall Jupiter and Fun-ambule. Buyers at 2500gns were W and M Clarke, Daventry.

West Sussex breeders N D Passmore and Son paid 2450gns for Brockhurst Mick, a 1996-bred bull by the Epatant son Brockhurst Jobling and out of the French cow Harmonie.
