SUCKLER producers considering synchronising their herd should start planning now.
Scottish Agricultural College beef expert Basil Lowman says planning synchronising before calving starts is vital. "Use of the correct drugs and appropriate bulls needs to be considered, and the involvement of your vet and the AI centre.
"Consider why you are synchronising. Usually it is because AI allows the use of better bulls. Also, ensure you choose the right sire. Do you want to use a terminal sire or to breed heifer replacements?"
The proportion of the herd that can be synchronised must also be considered. There must be an eight-week gap between calving and insemination. "Also you must consider where you will inseminate cows and whether facilities are appropriate," says Dr Lowman. *
