Syngenta to publish rice genome

By FWi staff

SYNGENTA, the worlds largest agrochemical company, has beaten rivals in the race to publish the first complete genome of a food crop.

It saw off Monsanto and the public sector International Rice Sequencing Project to complete the rice “book of life” reports the Financial Times.

The rice map will allow the company to transfer genes from one variety to another without mixing all the genes from two varieties.

Syngenta believes these crops with improved nutritional content will prove more popular to consumers than existing genetically modified varieties.
