Tesco plots revival of English cherry
By FWi staff
ENGLISH cherries, which have lost out to cheaper imports in recent years, could be on the brink of a revival, reports The Times
Supermarket giant Tesco is running trials in a secret location in Hertfordshire growing the fruit on a commercial scale.
If successful, it could reverse the decline caused by cheaper imports from America and Turkey.
The area under cultivation in England has fallen from 4072 acres in 1978 to 741 acres today. Production per acre has also declined.
