Test soil with care

Test soil with care

BE careful if the firm testing your soils for nutrients sends the samples south of the border for analysis. That is the warning to Scottish growers from Robert Ramsay of Angus-based Soilessentials.

Analytical methods appropriate for Englands often calcareous soils may give thoroughly misleading results when used to determine the status of Scotlands mainly acid land, he says.

"It could result in growers applying costly and unwanted phosphorus," says Mr Ramsay. &#42

This aerial shot of wheelings highlights the grid soil sampling method Soilessentials employs. But the results could be misleading if an inappropriate lab analysis is used, warns Robert Ramsay.
