Thainstone market re-opens – with no stock
By FWi staff
THE FIRST sale of store cattle and sheep since the foot-and-mouth crisis started is to take place on Friday (13 April), at Thainstone Centre, Inverurie, run by Aberdeen and Northern Marts – but with no stock in the mart.
The sale will be based on a description of the animals offered for sale provided by the marts auctioneers.
Buyers can either bid at the ringside or by telephone or electronically from one of the companys two other marts, Elgin Auction Centre or Caithness Livestock Centre.
“This combined system of bidding has worked for fodder and quota for several years and we see no reason why a similar arrangement for cattle and sheep cannot achieve some of the benefits of the livestock auction system,” said ANM chief executive Brian Pack.
The move follows the Scottish Executives announcement of a relaxation on movement restrictions in the area north of the Forth-Clyde valley from 16 April.
