The buzz sheep breed

LANARK auctioneer Brian Ross said there is still strong demand for top quality Texel in-lamb females, and this was evident as buyers competed for the best on offer at a collective sale at Lanark Auction Mart.

"The Texel is undoubtedly the buzz sheep breed at the moment. Theres no shortage of people still looking for really good ewes this season," said Mr Ross.

The Lanark fixture saw a reduction sale of the Winterhill flock from Dumfriesshire breeder Fiona Sloan, which sold to 500gns. The call came from Clark Farms, Lemahagow, for a 1998-bred ewe by Tophill Bright Spark and out of a Kelton Young Gun sired dam. The ewe was in-lamb to Garngour Ginola.

Another by the same sire and in-lamb to the Garngour tup realised 340gns to T A Jackson, Lanark.

The day also included the dispersal of Duns, Berwickshire, farmer Ian Dykes Blasonburie flock which sold to 220gns paid for a 1999 twin-born ewe by Ballaglonney Best Yet. Buyers were J Bonthron and Sons, Musselburgh, Midlothian.

Averages: Winterhill – six ewes £318. Blasonburie – 80 ewes £93. (Lawrie and Symington). &#42
