FLUKE cause a disease that is found in many regions of the country, one that can even be brought on to the farm when buying-in stock from fluke infected areas.
So, what should farmers do to try to keep the disease at bay?
When fluke have been diagnosed previously on your farm, or when you have brought in stock that might be infected, you should evaluate their treatment and management history, and discuss control options with your vet.
If you are only going to treat once in a year, the best time, undoubtedly, is at housing. This will cover the time when cattle typically suffer from the disease, winter and spring, and it will also ensure that they do not spread the disease on pasture when the cattle go out in the spring.
When animals are out-wintered, additional treatments over winter may be necessary because stock may pick up more fluke while grazing.
And do not forget that housing is an important time to treat your cattle for worms and external parasites such as lice and mange, making sure they are clean for the winter.
In an American study of beef heifers over a four-year period, there were significant benefits in weight gains, pregnancy rates and weaning weights of calves when the heifers were treated for all three types of parasites – fluke, worms and external parasites – compared with treating only for fluke, or for worms and external parasites only.
Parasites such as fluke require constant vigilance if they are not to become abundant and cause serious losses in stock. Carefully timed treatments, allied with appropriate grazing and animal management, can help to limit the impact of this disease.
Question 3
What treatment regime is likely to give the most productivity benefits?
A – Fluke only
B – Worms and external parasites
C – Fluke, worms and external parasites

IVOMEC Super kills more types of parasites than any other injectable. As well as helping to make sure your cattle are clear of worms, lice and mange for the winter, IVOMEC Super is proven to control fluke throughout the winter with a single injection at housing, or 4-6 weeks later.
