Top bulls still get bidders nod
TRADE was selective but buyers were still prepared to pay for the better bulls at the British Limousin Cattle Societys mid-summer sale at Carlisle where bidding reached 3800gns.
July is not be best time to sell sires, but a good crowd turned out at Borderway Mart for a bull parade preview – there was no show with this fixture – followed by a sale which saw 43 deals level at £1937.
The 14-month-old De Rosa Papa from brothers Tio and John De Rosa of Erbistock, Wrexham, north Wales commanded most interest from the ringside which produced a steady stream of bids to settle at 3800gns.
This son of Broadmeadows Canon is out of a cow by Woodhouse Dopey and had a Beef Value of 21. Buyers were W and G Tweddie, Brownsbank, Biggar.
Two bulls shared the 3500gns slot. First call came for the 21-month-old Griseburn Oneman from Andrew Horns herd at Appleby, Cumbria. He is also by Canon and out of the good bull-breeding cow Broadmeadows Erica, a daughter of Grahams Volcanic.
Onemans full brother made 5200gns in the same ring last May and an older full brother sold for 8000gns. Oneman was bought by GW Longrigg and Sons, Ormside, Appleby.
Breeders James Common and Son from Lockerbie, Dumfriesshire, shared the 3500gns tag when their Crossdykes Orlon was claimed by Isle of Islay farmer D Stewart. Orion is by Sarkley Moonlight and out of a Talent dam.
Glenrock Orion, by the successful imported sire Daim, realised 3000gns for Stephen Illingworth, Lockerbie. Orion had a Beef Value of 20 and heads for Tywyn, Merioneth, with buyers GT Pugh and Co.
Also at 3000gns was Wigton, Cumbria breeders Matt and Craig Ridleys Haltcliffe Onyx, a son of their 15,000gns purchase Greenwell Major. Buyers were WR Webster, Haltwhistle, Northumberland.
