Tractor parade world record bid postponed until new year

A group of British farmers vying to set a new world record for the largest parade of tractors in the same place have decided to postpone the record attempt until January next year.

The present official world record for the largest-ever parade of tractors in one place – 1,231 vehicles – was set by the Dresden branch of the Canadian Cancer Society in Dresden, Ontario, in July 2010.

Organisers had planned to attempt to break the record in London on or close to 19 November – the anniversary of the London Farming Rally.

But following discussions with Guinness World Records, police and associated parties, they have decided to delay the event due to November already shaping up to be a busy month for farmers.

A number of tractor rallies have already been scheduled to take place on or around Wednesday, 26 November – the date on which chancellor Rachel Reeves will deliver her Autumn Budget.

Co-ordinated attempt

Farmers Simon Orson, based in Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire, and Ollie Field, based in Pulborough, West Sussex, are co-ordinating the attempt.

Mr Orson said: “We want to maximise our chances of breaking the world record. We needed to make sure that our event didn’t shift the focus from the rallies scheduled to take place in London in November against the family farm tax.

“By moving the event to January, it gives us more time to plan and ensure we get the numbers not just to break the record, but to obliterate it.”

The farmers say they are continuing to have discussions with potential sponsors as they need to generate a significant amount of money to pay Guinness World Records for the record attempt.

They also want to keep the event free for farmers taking part.

Morale booster

The Metropolitan Police has been open to the record bid taking place at an agreed time and place in London.

Mr Field added: “The aim of this event is not only to break the world record, but also to bring farmers together and boost morale during this challenging time.”

The farmers are interested in hearing from anyone who wishes to sponsor the event. Email gwr@cropped.farm.
