Turn your straw into prize-winning asset

CASH prizes and three trips to this years Royal Smithfield Show are on offer in a competition being run by JCB Landpower and farmers weekly.

The idea, devised by Devon NFU deputy chairman, Richard Haddock, is for all farmers across the country to build straw people with eye-catching messages on land near roads and railway lines.

"What we want is these things all over the country so delegates going to the Labour Party conference in Blackpool next week (starting on Sunday, Sept 27) wont be able to get there without seeing messages from farmers along the route, " Mr Haddock said.

He got the idea from Bill Bowdens prototype, which has been in a roadside field in Devon for some weeks now. It attracted so much attention and comment locally that the idea was put forward at an NFU south-west crisis meeting as something most farmers could do.

To win the competition we need you to take pictures of your straw sculptures and send them to us. JCB Landpower has offered £250 for the first prize, £100 for second and £50 for the third best entry.

There will also be 10 prizes of £10 for the runners up.

The closing date for entries is Oct 16 and the first three prizes will be presented at Smithfield Show, for which farmers weekly will cover travelling expenses and provide show tickets.

Send your pictures, along with your name, address, phone number and details of where the straw people appeared, to: JCB/FW competition, Farmers Weekly, Quadrant House, The Quadrant, Sutton, Surrey, SM2 5AS. &#42
