UK gets into Portuguese bread-flour market

THE UK has established itself as an exporter of milling wheat to Portugal as samples from France and Germany fail to reach Portuguese millers specifications.

British exporters, led by Lincolnshire grain co-op Viking Cereals, are taking advantage of the opportunity opened up by British Cereal Exports to sell wheat into the Portuguese flour market.

In October a blend of Rialto and Charger in one compartment and Consort in the other were shipped to Leixoes in Northern Portugal, following a couple of seminars between the BCE and the Portuguese milling industry over the past few months.

“This is an outstanding opportunity for the UK to establish itself as a supplier of wheat for bread flour to Portugal,” said BCE director Dr Almond.

“About 70% of Portugals wheat imports are for bread flour, compared with 5% for biscuits and 15% for animal feed.”
