UK pushes for an end to milk quotas
FARM MINISTER Nick Brown has said the UK will push for the phasing out of European Union milk quotas.
The UK is preparing a detailed proposal with Denmark, Sweden and Italy on the issue.
Early drafts are thought to recommend a 4% increase in milk quotas by 2006. The minister also wants a 30% reduction in support prices which subsidise farmers. Milk producers would be provided with direct payments as compensation.
If the initiative is successful, milk quotas would be abolished after 2006.
