NEW research predicts that British shoppers will soon be the biggest spender on organic produce in Europe, reports The Guardian.

Sales of organic produce are set to increase to almost 3bn by 2005, predicts London-based market research company Datamonitor.

It says that by then UK consumers will be spending $69.5 (49) each on organic food, well above the EU average of $42 (30).

Growth is fuelled by concern over genetically modified food, food scares and healthy eating, claims Datamonitor.

It also claims that demand is driven by changing consumer attitudes with people being prepared to spend more on food.
