US and Canada monitor UK pigmeat
By Fwi staff
THE United States and Canada are monitoring imports of English pig products as a precaution against the spread of swine fever to north America.
A spokesman for the United States agriculture department said US officials were working with MAFF to make sure imports were not from infected farms.
Most of the pigmeat imported to the US is in the form of ribs for barbecues, said the spokesman. Each case is being dealt with on an individual basis.
Exports of English pigs and pig semen to the European Union have already been banned at least until the end of August following the swine fever outbreak.
