US studies Transatlantic Marketplace proposals

THE US is studying proposals from Sir Leon Brittan, the European
Union (EU) trade commissioner to expand the US-EU trade ties otherwise known as the Transatlantic Marketplace.

But the road Britan proposes is strewn with obstacles, says the Financial Times leader column. Brussels would exclude farming and films to placate the French but Washington would fight to include these.

The two sides are at odds on a number of food safety issues on Caribbean
bananas and trade sanctions against Iran, Libya and Cuba.
