Use variety variety – MGA

MIXING two or three maize varieties in the field could allow a more even maize crop to be harvested.

John Morgan, of the Maize Growers Association, says that many producers grow different varieties on the farm, but then have to compromise on harvest date because of contractor availability. The clamp can then vary in feed value, making accurate rationing difficult.

Growing different varieties either in different rows and then harvesting across rows or mixing varieties in the drill. This could allow growers a greater chance of achieving a consistent quality feed of 30% dry matter, using a single harvest date, he says. &#42
