Vietnam sees bumper rice harvest
A BUMPER rice harvest in Vietnam is set to raise world rice production to the highest on record next season, according to the US Department of Agriculture (USDA).
USDA forecasts Vietnam will produce 19.4 million tonnes in 1999-2000 in its latest World Agricultural Production report.
Global rice production is expected to reach over 390m tonnes in 1999-2000, compared with 384m tonnes in 1998-1999.
China, the worlds largest rice-grower, is also expecting a bigger crop next year.
In India, the second largest producer, production is expected to fall. Production in Indonesia – the worlds third largest producer – will will be at the same level as last year.
