The NFU is concerned that a shortage of seasonal workers this harvest could leave fruit and vegetable crops rotting in the ground.

Workers are urgently needed in the horticulture industry, especially for soft fruit crops such as strawberries and raspberries.

But it’s not just the horticulture industry that is affected, the meat and dairy processing sector is also reporting a decline in labour availability of both seasonal and year-round staff.

The NFU has called on the government to step in and reintroduce a seasonal agricultural workers scheme to ensure a sufficient supply of labour on our farms.
