War on plastic waste…
BECKNOCK Federation used Brecon Beacons National Parks farming weekend to demonstrate one contribution its members are making to environmental protection.
For two days Libanus YFC member Richard Smith spent most of this time telling hundreds of visitors about work and life on Gwilym Llwyd, his familys upland livestock unit, which adjoins the parks visitor centre. But when he could he also manned a display explaining how six local clubs collected 200t of recyclable waste agricultural plastic from 400 farms during the year which ended in June.
Instead of being burned, buried, left to be a wind blown blot on the landscape, or be a potential hazard to livestock, club members arranged for bale wrappings and silage clamp sheets to be dispatched for responsible disposal. This includes conversion into fence posts and garden furniture.
Richard was also showing off his clubs report on its own great plastic hunt, which was entered in a competition sponsored by the recycling agents. But the £350 prize was won by Troed Rhiw Dalar Club.
Federation organiser Philippa Davies reports that eight clubs are taking part in this years competition, including four located within the National Park. She would like to see other county federations following Brecknocks example in tackling a growing countryside problem. RD
