Warfare over pig welfare claims

THE British, Danish and Dutch pig industries are in a bitter war of words over quality in the 1.7 billion-a-year pig market, reports The Herald.

Rival claims for the production of the best quality and most welfare-friendly systems are being staked by representatives from each country.

Derek Andrews, development manager of the Meat & Livestock Commission (MLC), writes in The Grocer that, until Dutch and Danish industries implement the same standards as Britain, “we do not have a level playing field”.

John Howard, marketing director of the Danish Bacon & Meat Council, retorts that Danish producers observe British standards.

The MLC also disputes the claims of the Dutch to have the best quality scheme in Europe.
