Water expert says sewage sludge in OK

SCIENTIST Mark Everard is recommending the spread of sewage sludge on agricultural land as a soil conditioner and fertiliser close to the areas where it was produced.

Everard, a specialist in the water environment, at the Environment Agency, and director of science at the charitable consultancy The Natural Step UK, says this would close the “ecological cycle” to the extent that it would put nutrients back onto the land from which food supplied were produced in the first place.

This would not only avert excessive energy use in sludge transport and processing but it would also lessen the need to add artificial fertilisers and coil conditions,” he said.
