NORTHUMBERLAND pig farmer Bobby Waugh is due to appear in court to face 16 charges relating to foot-and-mouth disease.

The charges relate to pigs kept at Burnside Farm, Heddon-on-the-Wall, which were among the first livestock infected at the start of the epidemic.

Mr Waugh, 55, of St Lukes Road, Sunderland is jointly charged with his brother, Ronnie, 60. He is due to appear at Tynedale Magistrates Court, Hexham.

The charges include bringing unprocessed catering waste on to the premises and feeding it to pigs and of failing to notify officials of foot-and-mouth disease.

The brothers are also charged with causing unnecessary suffering to animals, failing to dispose of animal by-products and failing to record pig movement.

The prosecution was brought by the Northumberland Trading Standards Department after a complaint by the RSPCA.
