Welfare prompts Hazlewood closure

CONSUMER concerns over animal welfare have contributed to the withdrawal by Hazlewood Foods from the pre-packed cooked meats market.

The company has closed its remaining operations at Basildon and Milton Keynes with the loss of 457 jobs.

Hazlewood is taking an exceptional write-off of £15 million, plus goodwill, in its interim results due on 1 December.
