Welsh ministers threaten to lift beef ban
Welsh Assembly ministers are threatening to lift the beef ban putting pressure on Nick Brown, the agriculture minister, to make a decision soon.
Christine Gwyther, the Assembly minister for food, said she was only prepared to wait weeks rather than months.
The Assembly can lift the ban before the UK but the decision could threaten cross-border traffic and could prove impossible to police.
Brown has received a report from the new English Chief Medical Officer Liam Donaldson which says there is still risk of BSE being transmitted from cow to calf.
He is still consulting the ministers for Wales and Scotland as well as the health secretary Frank Dobson before making a decision about lifting the ban.
