Wheat performing well

DAVID HUES, who farms at Beckhampton in Wiltshire, has had some pleasing yields, but has been hindered by the weather, “Its really stop-start-go at the moment.”

Soissons winter wheat yielded 8.6t/ha (3.5t/acre), which is above average for the farm. There is still 280ha (700 acres) of Claire winter wheat to combine, which will probably be feed. “I have not been worried about the quality because up to now it has not been fit.”

Gerald winter oats yielded about 7.4t/ha (3t/acre) which he is happy about. Optic spring barley also has good specific weight.

Thirty-two hectares (80 acres) of spring oilseed rape should be ready in 10 days. “They had a very bad start but have improved a lot.” The farm is based on silt loam over chalk.
