WHITEBRED Shorthorn and Galloway cattle – the combination that produces the Blue-grey suckler cow – were on parade at Carlisle last week, where prices twice reached 1950gns for Whitebred bulls.
One of the top bids came from Dartmoor farmers Cyril and Richard Abel who farm near Tavistock. They paid 1950gns for Newcastleton breeder John Nichols June 1995-bred bull Townfoot Shambles.

Sharing the top price was Glendearg Sundance from Walter Scotts herd of seven Whitebred cows and 80 Galloways at Eskdalemuir, Langholm in the Border country.
He stays in the north, heading for Newcastleton with G * White and Son.
Taking the championship under judge Ian Bell, Langholm was Hott Bank Snowstorm from John Pattinson, Bardon Mill, Hexham. This Apr 1995-bred bull was by the 5000gns record breaker Murtholm Special Blend.
Mr Pattinsons bull made 1500gns to J M and A E Goodfellow, Newcastleton.
The Galloway Cattle Societys show and sale produced a top price of 1600gns for the second prize winning bull Dandy of Blackford from Mrs M A Smith, Blackford, Carlisle. Buyer was D McWhirter, Glenluce.
The male title went to north Cumbria breeders T V Blair and Sons Bart of Dodgsonstown bought jointly at 1000gns by G and C Neve, Carlisle and Mrs S Dixon-Thornton, Haltwhistle, Northumberland.
