Why the NFU likes Hollow Trees
NFU campaigns officer Victoria Brook says: "Many farm shops sell a good variety of produce, but what particularly impressed the judges at Hollow Trees Farm Shop was the wide range and high proportion of produce that comes from the holding itself.
"Half of produce sold is produced on the farm and includes beef, lamb, pork, vegetables, salads, plants and flowers. 30% comes from other local farms and the remaining 20% from other businesses in the region.
"Sally and Robert have developed an innovative promotional strategy for their business, with a clear focus on their marketplace.
"They produce a quarterly newsletter for customers called The Pink Pig, hold tasting days, sponsor local events, have built good relationships with their local media and also sell through their web-site.
"They encourage visits to the farm by all ages and have developed a farm trail to help improve public understanding about farming and the countryside. They have also advised several other farmers about starting up their own farm retailing businesses.
"Hollow Trees Farm Shop has obviously become an important part of the local community and provides a shining example of local and regional food promotion."
