Withdrawn bull makes private sale
Withdrawn bull makes private sale

DEVON Limousin breeders Andrew and Mark Quick had their judgment vindicated when a bold decision to withdraw a bull at 6000gns from the sale ring at Carlisle saw them strike a private deal for 8000gns just before the bull was loaded on the wagon to return home.
"He was too cheap at 6000gns. Hed have made 10,000gns at the May sale. We were ready to bring him home and use him ourselves," said Mark Quick of leading stock breeders E W Quick and Sons who run the Loosebeare Limousin herd near Crediton.
Loosebeare Rickys last minute deal topped the price list of the final Limousin sale of the season at Borderway Mart. By Greenwell Manager – a 9000gns purchase for the Quicks in 1997 – he is out of a Hartside Jacko cow. The Manager-Jacko combination is working well in the herd and Rickys dam has a younger full brother looking equally as good, says Mark Quick.
Ricky had a 400-day weight of 610kg and his beef value of 32 ranks him in the breeds top 1%
Buyers were Julie and Arthur Brownrigg from Hesket near Penrith who were under-bidders when the bull was withdrawn at 6000gns. Ricky had been spotted by Julies father, Alan Chapman. Family deliberations just managed to seal the transaction with an extra 2000gns.
The Brownriggs are restocking after foot-and-mouth and building up to 60 pedigree cows and 40 Limousin-cross sucklers.
The highest price paid through the ring was 6200gns given by Hector Rutherford of Hexham, Northumberland, for Gainsborough, Lincs breeder John Fieldsons Fieldson Rumpy (pictured). He is by Fieldson Officer – bought by the Gunnerfleet herd at Carnforth, Lancs, for 6500gns two years ago – and out of a Goldies Harvester dam. Rumpy had a beef value of 19 and will be used on a new herd of 60 commercial Limousin-cross sucklers.
But that was not the only Fieldson bull heading home with the Rutherford family. Julie Rutherford took a fancy to Fieldson Reflex – a similarly bred bull by the Cannon son Carthorpe Lotus and out of another Harvester-sired cow. He will be used in her son, John Rutherfords suckler herd.
Bulls from the Gunnerfleet herd of Jim and Ian Handley always command close scrutiny by the Carlisle crowd and this sale saw buyers favour Gunnerfleet Runningbull – a stylish son of Tunnelby Monkeytricks.
Monkeytricks has had a huge influence in the Handleys herd after being bought in the same sale ring in 1997 for 10,000gns. Runningbull was out of a cow by the Canadian sire Titan and her dam is the herds successful brood cow Ballyburton Una whose earnings exceed £50,000. Buyers at 5200gns were Messrs Walton, Fourstones, Hexham.
There were 13 bids of 3000gns and over, including two at 4000gns. The first came early on in the sale when A and A Lammie from Lochmaben, Dumfriesshire, claimed Muirhouse Reyna from George Andersons herd at Wishaw, Lanarkshire. Hes by Mereside Challenger and out of a Muirhouse Champion cow.
The second 4000gns call came from Messrs Paterson, Wigton, Cumbria, for Swarland Rudolph from A and D Proctors herd at Morpeth, Northumberland. Rudolph is by Ronick Jawk – a Ronick Hawk son with Uplands breeding and Rake Terence strengthening the female line.
Averages: 52 bulls £2524 (Harrison and Hetherington). *
