Young saplings plant trees for the future
EAGER YOUNGSTERS descended on the Bath & West Showground recently to play their part in the Woodland Trust”s national Tree For All campaign.
The pupils from Ilchester Community Primary School spent the morning planting more than 100 hazel saplings, as well as bluebells and snowdrops in the showground”s Woodland and Wildlife area.
The five to eight-year-olds, who have already planted a mix of trees at their school, were hard at work at the showground, laying the foundations for what will grow into a managed copse of hazel – the tree used to make Harry Potter”s magical broomstick.
The planting is all part of the Trust”s five-year campaign to plant 12m trees across the UK – one for every child aged under 16. “Planting a tree is something every child should have the chance to do as part of growing up,” says the Woodland Trust”s Andy Beer. “It is a fantastic thing to do when you are young. You have the opportunity to change the world – albeit in a tiny way.”
