YOUR CHANCE TO WIN A BRAND

NEW WESTMAC JF DISC MOWER

DISC mowers have been getting steadily more popular over the last five to six years, compared with drum mowers. Part of the reason is the desire by farmers to increase capacity, but theres also the growing trend towards higher dry matter silage. Lower power requirement, a greater choice of working widths and improved reliability have also had an effect.

WestMacs JF SB disc mower range is based on what it calls a top-service design of cutterbar. This allows individual disc drives to be examined and serviced, unlike the older type that required more expensive full dismantling to achieve the same result.

Powerful oval discs fitted with two heavy-duty twisted blades ensure a clean cut and even swath formations in all conditions. Swath widths vary from 1m to 2.2m (3ft 3in to 7ft 2in), depending on the model and narrow swaths (eg for baling) can be produced by adding a secondary inner swath board.

Drive is taken from the tractor pto at 540rpm and then transmitted via a strong multi-vee belt to the cutterbar. Triple cutterbar protection comes from a full-width bottom shield, individual stone protectors for each disc and extra stiffening along the rear of the cutterbar.

The WestMac SB disc mowers have an additional support to the far end of the cutterbar which is said to eliminate the risk of whip. This is more important on the wider working width machines. The mowers are also fully guarded by a strong canvas, built to meet stringent EU regulations.

For transport the mowers fold vertically and are easy and safe to move from field to field. Long mechanical life is built into the specification and the special powder paint is design not to crack or fade.

Four models are available: £2995 1.6m SB1600, £3235 2m SB2000, £3555 2.4m SB2400 and £4275 2.8m SB2800. Special grass seed versions are available for farmers who grow grass for seed and come in 2m and 2.4m versions. Compared with the standard model, these have special outer discs, crop divider and special swath board.
