‘Zero-option farming is viable’
By FWi staff
AGRICULTURES “zero option” is a realistic way to help feed the world without further damaging the environment, argues Professor Jules Pretty in The Guardian.
He says sustainable farming systems can be economically, environmentally and socially viable and contribute to local livelihoods.
However, Prof Jules, director of the University of Essex centre for the environment and society, noted that few projects he studied reported surpluses.
He warns that without appropriate policy support, sustainable schemes are likely to remain localised, or simply wither away.
