Zimbabwe puts reprieved white farms back on hit-list

Zimbabwe has reneged on a promise to hundreds of white farmers that their land would not be confiscated.

The government had written to 600 farmers who were on a “compulsory acquisition” list of 1,480 farms and told them their land was no longer a target.

But vice president Simon Muzenda was reported yesterday as saying that 200 were back on the list.

The government wants the farms to resettle 100,000 peasant families during the next five years. It follows a squatting campaign by thousands of natives.
