Adrian Harrison is desperate for rain
Well the weather is good, but is it too good? As I write we are desperate for rain, and I would imagine that there are quite a few of you out there with graver concerns than us. The warmth is welcome but I could just do with a few drops of good fresh rain to wash in the fertiliser and slurry.
We have been watching the milk price situation and we suddenly had a “good idea” – get ÂŁ250,000 gathered up, and buy yourself a seat for dinner at 10 Downing street. Suggest to the nearest MP that all dairy farmers are going on strike and there will be a national shortage. You thoroughly recommend that a broadcast is made announcing a state emergency and suggest that consumers stock up and take their jugs and “jerry cans” down to the nearest stores and fill up.
Joking aside, the cows are currently performing well and I am wary of putting them outside as it will upset their diet, although at the moment grass growth is a little slow. I have just got my CIS figures back and our herd average year to date is 6,300 litres with projections of 6,700 in the next 12 months. Fat 5.4; protein 3.8.
To end on a funny note there was a roaring sound outside the kitchen. I looked out and it was our neighbour coming to collect some milk from freshly calved cows for his newborn lambs, totally weatherproof in his 1,000cc golf buggy.
