Plans have been unveiled for a significant new free-range poultry unit  in Derbyshire.

The 20-acre unit near Kirk Langley will house 16,000 chickens if the development is approved by planners  at Amber Valley District Council.

Farmers Simon and Juliette Blake will supply all eggs laid to John Bowler Eggs,the free-range egg specialists.

The application states that the site, which is more than 200 metres  from the nearest house, will be fully screened by trees.

The application also describes the smell from the development as:  "no greater than would be expected from any other livestock agriculture operation".

Commenting on the application, a John Bowler spokesman said the company  had  written to householders in Kirk Langley inviting them to visit  similar units so they can see how the operation works.

The application will now go before Amber Valley District Council for consideration.
