Professor Peter Mertens, head of vector-borne diseases at the Institute for Animal Health, tells Farmers Weekly about the work being done to tackle the Schmallenberg virus.

He discusses the concerns about this new virus affecting sheep, cattle and goats and the uncertainty about how it will take shape in the future weeks and months.

He explains the technical challenges in detecting the antibodies and the work underway to achieve faster detection rates.
