Non-pathogenic H1N1 reported in Cheshire

DEFRA has announced the H1N1 avain influenza virus has been found in a flock of turkeys on a farm in Cheshire but there is no danger to neighbouring farms or to people.

The routine investigation into ill turkeys, and a subsequent lab test, detected the H1N1 virus, but not to levels which would result in the government being required to take action. All restrictions on the farm have been lifted and the bird’s health has improved.

The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has assessed the farm and found there is no risk to public health from the farm or contact with cooked poultry meat, eggs or other products from the farm.

DEFRA has reminded farmers to maintain biosecurity on farm and to remain vigilant for signs of disease within bird populations.

In recent days South Korea has increased its warning level for avian influenza, with confirmed outbreaks at 16 farms, seeing 470,000 ducks and chickens slaughtered already.
