Charollais is Great Yorkshire sheep champion
With the sheep interbreed judging split into four sections and undertaken by a varying panel of judges the marathon judging stint this morning meant many ringsiders were unsure exactly what they were watching.
However, the judges charged with selecting the overall champion knew what they were looking for and eventually found their interbreed champion in the form of two shear Charollais tup Logie Durno I’m Yer Man. This one is a Crogham Hannibal 2 son out of a ewe which is full sister to Logie Durno Eral Dunbar and is by Glyn Cloch Chippendale, he stood interbreed champion at last year’s Royal Highland Show as a shearling.
Exhibited at Harrogate by Peter Vaughan, he is owned in a three way split by Mr Vaughan, The Quick family and Geoff Probert, having been bought at last year’s premier Charollais sale at Worcester for 3750gns.
Standing reserve overall was a three shear Swaledale ewe from John Bradley. This one is by an £8500 Bull and Cave sire, which himself has previously stood reserve interbreed at the Great Yorkshire, and is out of a homebred dam by a Catlaw sire. She has previously been interbreed champion at Kilnsey show and is one of 650 Swaledale ewes run by Mr Bradley at home, alongside another 350 Dalesbred and crossbred ewes.
The Charollais came through as the terminal sire male champion, beating the Berrichon Du Cher from D R Whitcher in that section.
Terminal sire female honours went to Herbie Kennedy’s Charollais ewe, with the Texel ewe from the Clark family reserve.
In the Shortwool/Lowland section the champion was the Southdown ram lamb from Terry and Lesley Mead, with the Bleu Du Maine from J W and K M Davison reserve.
Taking the female title in the same section was the Bleu Du Maine from Jonathan McInnes Skinner, reserve here was the Rouge from J R Wilkinson.
In the Longwool section the male title went to the Wensleydale from J N Prescott, reserve was the Leicester Longwool from Brian Glaves.
The Hill male championship went to the North Country Cheviot, while the hill female was won by the Swaledale. Reserve hill female was North Country Cheviot ewe.
