Draft sale of the Ewefields herd of South Devons sells to 6,100gns

The recent draft sale for the Warhurst family’s Ewefields herd of South Devons at Sutton-Under-Brailles, Banbury saw strong demand for the best of the cattle on offer.

Bulls sold to a top of 6,100gns and cows and calves to 1,800gns, with the best call of the day going  to Ewefields Hanbury 10. This one is a March 2010-born son of Welland Valley Hanbury 4 and out of Ewefields Venus, a Waddeton Homer 1 daughter. He sold to F J F Watson and Son, Milton Keynes, with a Quality Beef Index of +26.

Following behind that at 4,500gns was Ewefields Hanbury 9,  another by Welland Valley Hanbury 4. Born in February 2010 he is out of Ewefields Downy 14, a Highgate Hayden 7 daughter. He sold with a QBI of +28 to Snaigow Farming, Inverness.

And then at 3,200gns was another February 2010-born Hanbury 4 son, Ewefields Hanbury 8. This one is out of Ewefields Mayflower 7, an Edmeston Centurion 5 daughter and has a QBI of +24. He found a new home with Portman Burley Estate, Beaconsfield.

A trio sold at 2000gns, with all three being sons of homebred sire Ewefields Jeffrey. Two sold to Kent commercial suckler farmers Messrs Burden Bros for use in their large-scale operation, with the other at this money going to A E J and F J Claridge, Buckinghamshire.

Topping the cows and calves was an 1800gns bid for Ewefields Downy 9, an Edmeston Centurion 5 daughter out of Roskymer Downy 97, a Roskymer Poldark 12 daughter. This eighth calver went with her heifer calf by Hanbury 4 at foot and sold to D E Camp, London.

In the heifers on offer the best price of 1600gns was paid for Ewefields Venus 5, a February 2010-born Ewefields Jeffrey daughter out of Ewefields Venus 2, a Highgate Hayden 7 daughter.
