Strong cattle trade at Sedgemoor sees 170.5p/kg high

Cattle trade met a strong trade at Sedgemoor auction with the top price of 170.5p/kg achieved for a shapely, red Limousin cross from A G F Lockyer.

A smart Devon from Messrs E W Jeanes and Son was next in the money achieving 159.5p/kg. A leaner meat Limousin from Messrs N M and C L Norris met a call of 149.5p/kg.

Good meat sucklers made around 140p/kg with grazing types in keen demand realising 158.5p/kg for a Saler from J C Burge, when another grazing Simmental from J F Evens selling to 139.5p/kg.

Suckers sold to ÂŁ1,227.88 for a 893kg Angus from M E Riddle. Others sold to ÂŁ1,141.43 for a British Blue from R Norman and ÂŁ1,055.59 for a Hereford from S Chard.

Black and whites were in great demand. Top price was 154.5p/kg for a tested red Friesian from Messrs Tratt. A run of better meat black and whites from Messrs D and I Dyer sold well at 147p/kg, 145.5p/kg, 144p/kg (x3), 143.5p/kg and 142p/kg. Others similar from W G Down achieved 142p/kg (x2), who sold another at 139.5p/kg.

Black and whites sold to ÂŁ1,209.60 from Messrs D and I Dyer, who sold another at ÂŁ1,156.61.

All cows averaged ÂŁ877.99, when the minimum was ÂŁ528.91, which reflected the strong grazing trade.

Cull bulls sold to ÂŁ1,437.78 and 144.5p/kg for a well fleshed Devon from Messrs PJ and EJ Gwynn.
