Balmoral Show 2012: Holstein cow scoops championship

From the herd of Mr Samuel McCormick, 25 Kerr’s Road, Bangor, Co. Down, this one (pictured above) is by Erbacres Damion and out of Hilltara Storm Maude – she is currently giving 48 litres a day.

This was her third outing, having won interbreed in-milk heifer at the Balmoral Winter Fair in 2010, as well as receiving an honourable mention at last year’s Winter Fair.

 

In reserve was a fourth calving Ayrshire cow – Ravenhill Ethel 395 – from Mr John W Suffern at Ravenhill Farm, Crumlin, Co Antrim.  

This one (pictured above) is by Woodland View Pardner and out of Ravenhill Ethel 290 – she is currently averaging 10,500 litres a year.  Today’s win follows on from taking the Ayrshire breed champion title at Balmoral for the third year in a row.  

Judge Mrs Jenny Daw from the pedigree Jersey Bluegrass herd said:  “The winner was walking on a really good set of feet and legs, and a really nice wide udder.  I admired the maturity of the Ayshire.  All down the line, the quality of cattle was excellent.”
