RHS 2012: Texel ewe secures sheep championship

2362012_RHS_Sheep_Champion.jpgThe overall sheep interbreed silverware was awarded to a one crop Texel ewe from John Forsyth’s Glenside flock, Lochlands Farm, Ayrshire.

Mr Forsyth has won titles at 8 out of 10 Royal Highland Shows, and his champion ewe was also champion of champions at last year’s Biggar Show. This one is homebred – she is by Muiresk Blondin and out of a dam sired by Keltic Star.

In reserve was a two crop Suffolk ewe from Robbie Wilson, North Dorlaithers, Aberdeenshire, who keeps a flock of 800 Texel and Suffolk ewes.
This one is homebred, by Strathisla Speed and out of Strathisla Kingsway – her brothers have sold for 15,000gns and 8,000gns to Southern Ireland.  Mr Wilson now plans to put her into his ET programme.
Judge Robert Thomson, Castle Douglas said:  “The champion was the most correct sheep that’s here and a really good example of the breed.  The reserve was very close, and an example of the modern Suffolk breed.”
