Strong sheep trade at Kington

There was a good entry of 2,000 sheep at yesterday’s sale at Kington where lambs averaged 1.99p/kg up to 2.15p/kg.

 

Auctioneers McCartneys said: “We had a good entry of 1,700 spring lambs for our summer show and sale, which sold to a much better trade.”

 

 Light lambs sold to premium prices, but all lambs were in good demand by five buyers.

 

The champion pen of lambs was awarded to Ashley Griffiths for some Texel lambs which weighed 41kg and were purchased by Euro Quality lamb at ÂŁ87.50 a head.

 

The reserve champion pen of lambs was awarded to Harry Burton for some Charollais cross lambs which weighed 46kg and were sold to F Drury and Sons for ÂŁ88.

 

39kg lambs from W H Jones made ÂŁ81.50, 39kg lambs from E C Jones made ÂŁ84.50, 42kg lambs from R B and D N Read made ÂŁ85.50, 43kg lambs from J Gwatkin and Son made ÂŁ84.20

 

There was a small entry of end of season hoggets which sold to a brisk trade and averaged 1.58p/kg.

 

McCartneys said a good entry of 300 cull ewes sold to a better trade than last week and buyers were requiring leaner ewes which sold to premium prices.

 

The ewes sold to a top of ÂŁ125.50 for some Texel x ewes from DT and S M Owens and all the ewes averaged a good ÂŁ86 a head with many hill ewes forward. Tups sold to a good trade with a top of ÂŁ90 and to average ÂŁ81 a head. The cull ewes included a large proportion of thinner mule ewes and smaller hill ewes.
