British Blues reach 10,000gns at Carlisle

Neville and Nicholas Raine from Barnard Castle scooped the top price of 10,000gns at the British Blue Cattle Society’s autumn sale at Borderway Mart, Carlisle.

Their black and white bull Bluegrass Famous took the event’s reserve male championship under judge Nigel Pritchard from Herefordshire and went on to lead the bidding at 10,000gns selling to Messrs Fleming, Kelso. Famous is by Heros du Peroy and out of the successful show cow Bluegrass Centrefold.

Danny and Jane Wylie, who are dispersing their Tamhorn herd next month, stood supreme champion with Tamhorn Goliath who sold for 8200gns. This blue-roan son of Ballygrange Alex was bought by J Hartley, Much Wenlock, Shropshire.

Mel and Diane Lucas from Antrim had a successful trip when their Lukeroyal Gladiator, a mainly black son of Lukeroyal Battleaxe, made 8000gns to K A Brown and Sons, Appleby, Cumbria.

More cash came the way of the Tamhorn herd when Tamhorn Gibson, by Tamhorn Sumo, realised 7000gns to B R Fawcett, Leyburn, North Yorkshire.

Three females reached 5000gns. Solway View Foxy Lady from Maulcastle Farming Company in south west Scotland sold to Ayrshire-based buyer R Young. This maiden heifer was reserve overall champion and reserve junior interbreed champion at this year’s Great Yorkshire Show. She is by Colos Van Daisel.

Also at 5000gns was Willnant Gina from Adrian Williams. This maiden heifer is by Mountjoy Utopia and out of the 2008 Royal Welsh champion Lukeroyal Bimbo. She had been flushed once and produced five Grade A embryos. She took the female title on the day and sold to James Alexander, Randalstown, Northern Ireland.

Staying in Cumbria with buyer M Benson, Ulverston was the 10-month-old heifer New Close Hope, another daughter of Colos Van Daisel. Consigned by Staffordshire breeder I Wilson, she was calf champion at the North West club’s calf show last month.

Averages: 18 bulls £4643 and eight maiden heifers £3077.
