Royal Highland Winter Fair 2012: Supreme beef championships
It was a day for the ladies in the beef ring with judge Michael Alford awarding his supreme champion and reserve to heifers.
Taking the ultimate title was the heifer champion 590kg Marvelous Mo from Mr Stewart Bett and Miss Lynsey McKay, Castleton Farm, Stirlingshire. Bred by Mr Mclaren of Kinross, Mo is by Limousin, Lodge Danny Boy and out of a Limousin cross.
Shown in the ring by vet nurse, Miss McKay, Mo was also placed first at the recent AgriExpo. She is one of two heifers owned by the pair and kept with the Ronnick herd where Mr Bett works as stockman.
Mr Alford commented: “I was after cattle that were full of meat today. The champion was a perfect show animal and an easy winner.”
Overall reserve was then awarded to the reserve heifer champion, 490kg Wicco Booby (Exp.106). Bred by James Morrison, Banffshire, she is by Limousin Haltcliffe Donny and out of a Limousin cross. She was put forward by Mr Grant Morrison, Newtack, Keith.
Mr Alford said the reserve was clean, with a good top line and was balanced and showy and both animals were big percentage heifers which were good for the meat industry.
Taking the championship steer title (above) was Miss Jennifer Hyslop’s 530kg Jack Flash (Exp.69). Bred by J Robertson of Pitlochry, this September 2011 born steer is by Limousin Fedney Dapper and out of a British Blue cross.
Reserve was Red Duke (Exp. 31) from Messrs McBeath and Owen, Lower Greenyards Farm, Bannockburn. This 690kg steer is homebred and by Charolais Duenawd Dole and out of a Limousin cross Angus.
