Entries down at Kington Markets pre-Easter sale

McCartney’s of Kington reported a smaller entry of 1,103 sheep at the pre-Easter sale.

A good entry of 851 hoggets for the sale were forward which sold to a good trade which would be firmer than the beginning of the week. The supply of hoggets has decreased over the past week due to the snowy weather which has helped to maintain the level of trade, report auctioneers.

The demand was good for all weights and meated lambs sold to a significant premium.

The top price hogget’s were ÂŁ93 a head for some 55kg hogget’s from K R Price.

We had an good trade on the week and all the hogget’s at Kington averaged 2.02p/kg up to 2.15p/kg

Hogget’s between 25kg and 32kg averaged 1.70p/kg up to 1.75p/kg

Hogget’s between 32kg and 39kg averaged 1.95p/kg up to 2.05p/kg

Hogget’s between 39.5kg and 45.5kg averaged 2.04p/kg up to 2.15p/kg

Hogget’s between 46kg & 52kg averaged 1.88p/kg up to 1.97p/kg

Hogget’s over 52kg averaged 1.65p/kg up to 1.70p/kg

Some 39kg hogget’s from C and S F Thomas made ÂŁ80, 40kg hogget’s from R D and J M Ransome made ÂŁ81.40, 42kg hogget’s from A M and G J Probert made ÂŁ90, 43kg hogget’s from C and S F Thomas made ÂŁ92.50, 44kg hogget’s from R M and C F Joyce made ÂŁ89.20, 45kg hogget’s from G L Morgan made ÂŁ91, 46kg hogget’s from A E Jones and Son made ÂŁ90, 49kg hoggets from JT Jones and Sons made ÂŁ92, 51kg hogget’s from S G Deakins made ÂŁ92.

There was a good entry for the day of 252 cull ewes selling to an excellent trade which would be pounds dearer than the previous days markets. Again same as the hoggets well meated ewes sold to a significant premium. Smaller hill type ewes were a good trade for the export market as long as they were meated.

Ewes sold to a top of ÂŁ117 for some Suffolk x ewes from J E T Jones and all the ewes averaged ÂŁ86 a head with many hill and thin ewes forward. Tups and weathers sold to ÂŁ106.50 and averaged ÂŁ82. The cull ewes included a large proportion of thinner mule ewes and smaller hill ewes.
